SVU - New SVU Publication - The Taste of a Lost Homeland
The Taste of Lost Homeland?
This is the title of an important SVU publication being readied for the SVU Congress in Pilsen this June. It is a bilingual anthology of Czech and Slovak exile poetry with translations into English. Twenty-one poets are represented. Some of the poems were translated by the authors themselves; in addition, fourteen other translators have lent their talent to this endeavor. The anthology contains close to a hundred poems, all of which bear the theme of nostalgia and love for the homeland which was left behind. The anthology will be a very attractive hard bound edition with a colorful cover designed by the Czech artist Oton Kovarik from Los Angeles.
Since more than half of the book is written in English - besides the translations there are English introductory remarks and essays, biographies of the poets and translators - it is of greatest interest to Czech and Slovak Americans and to scholars of these two Slavic languages. The poets represented all live or have lived either in the United States or Canada.
We think that many departments of Slavic languages and literatures in the USA and Canada would find the anthology a very valuable tool. Also, we are certain that SVU local chapters would like to have copies for their membership. After the Congress the books will be shipped to Washington, D.C. The books will cost U.S. $18.00 plus shipping costs. Interested parties should contact the Chief Editor of the anthology, Dr. Vera Borkovec, at 12013 Kemp Mill Road, Silver Spring, Maryland 20902 or E-mail her at borkovec@erols.com
