Advice to Contributors
Kosmas is devoted primarily to scholarly research in all relevant academic disciplines within the humanities, arts, and sciences; memoirs or creative writing may be published in exceptional cases. Ordinarily, manuscripts should be no longer than 25-30 pages, double-spaced. Book reviews should be 500-700 words in length. Manuscripts will not be returned unless postage is enclosed.
Manuscripts may be submitted in English, Slovak, or Czech, but an English translation must accompany a manuscript in a language other than English. Kosmas publishes only in English.
Manuscripts should be prepared in WordPerfect 6.0 (or higher) for Windows. Each author should submit two paper copies of the manuscript along with a copy on a computer diskette. WordPerfect "Czech Codes" should be used when appropriate. The entire text should be double-spaced, including block quotations and notes. Book titles and non-English words should appear in italics. Endnotes are preferred to the "Works Cited" format. Transliterations of Cyrillic should follow the Library of Congress method. For all additional matters of style, the current edition of the Chicago Manual of Style should be consulted.
From the Editor
As the new editor of Kosmas, I encourage everyone interested in Czech and Slovak culture to subscribe (or renew their subscriptions) to this important bi-annual, multidisciplinary journal that focuses on Czech, Slovak, and Central European Studies. Kosmas, published (in English) by the SVU (Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences) and now with editorial offices at Texas A&M University, is devoted primarily to scholarly research in all relevant academic disciplines within the humanities, arts, and sciences.
Here are just a few of the topics that we expect to cover in volume four (Fall 2000 and Spring 2001): the current status of the Gypsy question in the Czech Republic, Thomas Masaryk's interpretation of Dostoevski's novels, science policy today in Central Europe, musicological studies of Czech and Slovak composers, linguistic analyses of Czech still spoken in the US, the translation of Shakespeare into Czech, bibliographical issues concerning Czech and Slovak collections at major libraries. Among special features will be excerpts from the memoirs of the Slovak Roman Catholic Cardinal Jan Chryzostom Korec (appearing for the first time in English translation) and an interview with filmmaker Jan Kaplan illustrated with excerpts from his work-in progress: a book of photographs tentatively entitled Atlantic Crossings. This book, when completed, will trace the "American presence" in the Czech lands, from the earliest encounters to the present.
