SVU Publication To Honor Frank Marlow's Memory

To honor the memory of our Founding Member Frank Marlow, the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences is planning to publish an anthology of Czech and Slovak poetry written in exile. Professor Vera Borkovec will be putting together this anthology which will feature our best poets and be a fitting memorial to the man who so well understood and appreciated the Czech language, Czech and Slovak literature and poetry. She can be reached at: 12013 Kemp Mill Rd., Silver Spring, MD 20902-1515; telephone: (301) 622-4775; e-mail: borkovec@erols.com.

This effort will take both time and money. Irene Marlow, Frank's widow, has graciously agreed that the Frank Marlow Memorial fund be used for this purpose. We are now appealing to all friends of Frank Marlow as well as to all friends of good poetry to make contributions to the Frank Marlow fund, to honor his memory and to make this endeavor possible.

Send your contributions to: Frank Marlow Fund, c/o SVU Treasurer, Frank Mucha, 200 Riverside Drive, Apt. 5F, New York, NY 10025.

Zdenka Fischmann's Bequest to SVU

Zdenka Fischmann, who was one of the most devoted members of our Society, bequeathed to SVU in her Last Will the sum of thirty thousand dollars with the stipulation that the Society would publish her and her husband's works. The SVU Executive Board, which welcomed the unexpected news with great appreciation, agreed to honor her wishes. A special editorial board is being set up with the responsibility of preparing the manuscript for publication.

After informing the Executor, Mrs. Hannelies S. McFalls, of the SVU decision, President of SVU received from her the following statement: "This is what Zdenka had hoped when she made her generous bequest to the SVU, an organization that was very important to her and to which, for many years, she had given endless hours, whether as editor of the Bulletin for the SVU Los Angeles Chapter, and later for the Bulletin of the whole Society, or as a reviewer, researcher and author. In my long friendship with her I don't remember a time when she was not deeply involved in some intellectual project dealing with her beloved homeland, often, of course, in her special field of music, but never shying away from any other pertinent subject. She was most loyal to your organization, as she was in all her relationships, and thus it will only be fitting if, as you mentioned, there will be a tribute to her at the SVU World Congress in August."

In connection with the planned publication we are considering including a few additional articles relating to Zdenka's life and work. They could also be presented at the forthcoming SVU World Congress. Interested members should contact Mila Rechcigl, 1703 Mark Lane, Rockville, MD 20852; tel.: (301) 881-7222, FAX: (301) 881-9667; e-mail: rechcigl@aol.com
