May 31 - Pittsburgh Chapter Time : The afternoon of May 31, 2001 Place: CNG Tower, Seventh and Penn Avenues,Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15222 Nature of Event: Unveiling of historical marker to honor the signing of The Pittsburgh Agreement on May 31, 1918. Name of Speakers Representatives from:The Czech and Slovak Embassies, State and local organizations, Family members of some of those who originally signed this document. Other honored guests Background: The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania recently approved an application submitted on behalf of the Czechoslovak Nationality Classroom Committee of the University of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh chapter of SVU to have the plaque honoring the signing of The Pittsburgh Agreement officially recognized as an historic plaque in the state of Pennsylvania. This plaque honors the work of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, one of the authors of The Pittsburgh Agreement, in leading the Czechs and Slovaks toward the establishment of an independent Czechoslovakia after the First World War. A ceremony to celebrate the unveiling of this official historic marker is planned for this May 31, the same date that the agreement was signed in 1918, and will be held at the site of the original signing in downtown Pittsburgh
