Kosmas Journal

The Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences (SVU) is pleased to announce the resumption of publication of its prestigious English periodical Kosmas, which was, before the Velvet Revolution, one of the principal forums for the academic community worldwide in things Czech and Slovak. Kosmas will continue its tradition of publishing scholarly articles written in a readable and readily intelligible way, in the humanities, social sciences, and arts and letters. It is the only scholarly journal in English that focuses primarily on the past and present experience of the people of the Czechlands, Slovakia, and neighboring countries.

Although the periodical's broad coverage might warrant calling it "Cosmos", the title Kosmas was chosen to honor the historian and monk of that name who practiced many arts and sciences and wrote the memorable Chronica Bohemorum which has survived nearly one millennium as an eloquent treatise on early medieval Bohemia. No lesser authority than Frantisek Palacky, the "Father of the Nation" and an eminent leader of the Czech national revival, bestowed on Kosmas (1045-1125) the epithet of "The virtual Herodotus of his country."

The editors welcome submission of articles and reviews on Czech, Slovak, and Central European history, arts, letters, politics, economic development. and the history of science and technology. Also solicited are articles about Slovak and Czech immigrants and their descendants abroad. The articles should be sent to the Editor: Bruce Garver, Dept. of History, University of Nebraska at Omaha, Omaha, NE 68182- 0213. Phone: (402) 554-4824; FAX: (402) 554-2794: e-mail: bgarver@unomaha.edu
